MONTEGO BAY, St James — University of the West Indies, Western Jamaica Campus, undergraduate student Shanice Sampson recently became the first recipient of the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ) BPO Scholarship & Internship Award.

The $100,000 scholarship will go towards Sampson’s tuition, while she will also receive a stipend of $360,000 as an intern for 10 months in the secretariat and incubator in the business processing outsourcing (BPO) industry.

The BPO Scholarship & Internship opportunity was awarded to an individual on a competitive basis of academic performance, leadership and promise of future contributions to the BPO industry.

A second-year student majoring in integrated marketing & communication with a minor in entertainment and cultural enterprise management, Sampson expressed gratitude to the BPIAJ for selecting her from the submitted applicants as the first recipient of the award.

“I proudly stand before you all as the very first recipient of this award. I feel very privileged and touched to receive the BPIAJ’s support towards my tertiary endeavours. Having an education for some is but a dream, a dream that never comes through for many due to varying reasons, the most common of which is the lack of financing. So I must express my deepest appreciation to the BPIAJ for not only helping me by awarding me this scholarship and internship, but also lessening the burden that my parents have to shoulder to make my dream a reality,” Sampson said.

“Your investment in me and my future will be a great asset for your company and Jamaica on a whole. I cannot adequately express how appreciative I am of your assistance and your support and confidence in my future.”

Meanwhile, Gloria Henry, president of the BPIAJ, said that the objective of the BPO Scholarship & Internship Programme is to provide a “stimulating and rewarding training experience for students who are passionate about obtaining valuable experience that contributes to educational and professional growth”.
